Study of the structure and properties of organic molecules, and transition states; kinetic of reactions and reaction mechanisms: free radical substitution reaction of alkanes; stereochemistry, nucleophilic aliphatic substitution, and reaction of alcohols, ethers and epoxides; alkenes; electrophilic free radical, stereoelective and stereospecific reactions.
Students who enroll in CHEM-342-MO1 must enroll also in a lab section.
II. Course Objectives:
Understand the fundamentals of atomic orbital (AO) and molecular orbital (MO) theory.
Get a good overview of how reactions occur.
Introduce stereochemistry thoroughly.
To give an overview of the reactivity of multiple bonds.
To introduce the concept of polarity and its consequences in organic reactions.
