ESCUELA INTERNACIONAL DE PROTOCOLO Bachelor Degree: BSc in Politics and International Relations University of London External Programme Lead College: London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE) A MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT Escuela Internacional de Protocolo (EIP) will offer tuition in Madrid from October 2003 for the Bachelor Degree: BSc in Politics and International Relations from London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE). The degree is part of the University of London External Programme. Without any doubt the London School of Economics and Political Science is recognized in the world as one of the leading research and teaching institutions in the field of social sciences since a great number of statesmen, authors and thinkers from all over the world can be found among its scholars and alumni. By offering tuition and academic support to students in Madrid so that they can obtain this Bachelor Degree from the University of London, EIP wants to move further ahead and at the same time keep within its existing direction of studies: the way relations are developed and organized, as well as examining the correct etiquette and protocol. The decision to offer this programme has also been taken in the light of the many positions available today within international organisations both of a business and non-profit nature. We live in a world where many issues have become more complex than ever before: the breach between North and South, the globalisation of the economy, inequality, disturbances and threats to stability, a proliferation of agencies and non-governmental institutions that are responsible for the distribution of humanitarian help from the developed countries. In order to grasp the evolution of these events, an understanding of politics and international relations is needed. This underlines the demand for qualified people who are capable of understanding how societies are organized and structured and also how they interrelate with each other in world society. The skills necessary to manage and understand these conditions extends to many work areas and positions. Therefore the studies in politics and international relations are also relevant for people who have already a degree but need to improve their career prospects. EIP by applying the same methodology and the same programme of studies of LSE will prepare students to face new challenges. The degree from the University of London made available in Spain by EIP offers the advantage that students can complete their studies without having to move to Britain. Those who complete the programme successfully will receive the same award as the students in London. As the programme is taught in English, students should have reached the level of proficiency in English. The lecturers are highly qualified professionals with an international background and experience. They are all familiar with the British university system. EIP assumes this responsibility based on the desire to offer -as it already does with the studies in Protocol- the necessary knowledge and understanding of politics and international relations by providing the academic knowledge together with practical experience if necessary. Carlos Fuente Lafuente Presdident of EIP ESCUELA INTERNACIONAL DE PROTOCOLO Escuela Internacional de Protocolo (EIP) started offering study programmes in Protocol and Institutional Relations in 1996. Although the growth of government and corporate events has grown enormously in Spain in the last decade, there was no professional training for people responsible for organizing them. Therefore a group of professionals decided to start EIP having reached today a considerable recognition as an institution of higher education. About 4000 EIP graduates have already found a position in public and private institutions throughout the country. Today EIP offers a university degree and it has developed the only research center in international protocol in Spain. EIP has study centers in seven other Spanish cities: Barcelona, Valencia, Granada, las Palmas de Gran Canaria, Elche, Oviedo and Valladolid. However, tuition for the Bachelor Degree: BSc in Politics and International Relations from the University of London, will only be offered at its central location in Madrid. UNIVERSITY OF LONDON EXTERNAL PROGRAMME The University of London, which was established in 1836, is one of the oldest and largest of the universities in the United Kingdom. It is a federation of 17 colleges, some of which are specialized as the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE) which is Europe's leading social sciences institution. As early as 1858 the University of London established its External Programme and no distinction is made in the quality of award gained by the external students and the students in London. The LSE has built its reputation on its atmosphere of vigorous intellectual argument and informed debate. It encourages students to think critically and increase their understanding of how and why modern societies function the way they do. One of the subjects pioneered at LSE is International Relations. Thirteen Nobel Prize winners in economics, literature and peace have been either LSE staff or alumni and around 28 past or present heads of state have studied at LSE. EIP's students will be registered with the University of London External Programme and will follow the same study programme as students at the LSE in London. The whole programme will be taught in English. FEATURES OF THE DEGREE The study of Politics and International Relations is concerned with looking beyond the immediate drama of events in world society. In addition to how political power is distributed and organised within the state and between states, the focus is on the behaviour of states and their relations with others. This includes such issues as peace, war, order and instability in the international system. These issues are very much with us in the early part of the twenty-first century, in as much as we live in a world characterised by the forces of globalisation - of the international economy, of the workplace, of ideas, of threats to security and to the environment . WHO IS IT FOR ? A Bachelor's Degree in Politics and International Relations provides students with a broad knowledge base that can be used to excel in a variety of occupations. It has relevance in particular for those who want to pursue a career in: International Organisations and Agencies (EU, UN, etc.) National and International Institutions The business world Mass media Non-Governmental Organisations The civil service The public sector Teaching The BSc in Politics and International Relations can be also of interest to people who may already have a degree or work experience, and would like to widen his/her possibilities to find a position in an international environment.
